Crosschain Improves the Gaming Experience: Planet IX Integrates Connext
Planet IX, the most popular web3 game on Polygon, has integrated Connext to enable a better gaming experience via crosschain staking.
The Vision of Planet IX
Planet IX is a leading NFT-based space strategy game that combines Play-to-Earn and DeFi, with many other features and mechanics.
The team behind Planet IX believes in a decentralized gaming experience, where the game creators don’t have sole ownership and control of the game. Instead, players are empowered to control their gaming experience fully. The emerging possibilities of what can be created in the metaverse are one of the core drivers of interest in the game.
Use Case
A core component of Planet IX’s gaming dynamics are the Planet IX Lands NFTs. These special NFTs are created on the Ethereum blockchain, and need to be staked in order to receive rewards on Polygon, where the game runs.
Planet IX’s integration with Connext enables secure communication between the two chains, while managing the underlying crosschain infrastructure.
PlanetIX players will see the benefits of the integration in 2 ways:
- Today: A Seamless Crosschain Experience. Players can now safely stake their NFTs on Ethereum and play on Polygon without the need to bridge as an intermediary step.
- In the Future: A Chain-agnostic Experience: Players no longer need to know which chain assets are on. The Connext-enabled game will abstract away the chains entirely for the player, allowing them to focus on what matters most, the game. This step will further remove barriers to accessing web3 games and bring Planet IX to an ever more mainstream audience.
How It Works
Mission Control is a staking game on Polygon, which consists of a hexagonal grid. There are two concentric rings: an inner ring where users can stake assets for free and an outer ring that costs a fixed monthly rent.
Planet IX wanted to grant users the right to stake on the outer ring free of cost, based on ownership of an ERC-1155 asset on Ethereum called Newlands Genesis. To achieve this, Planet IX built a locking contract where users can stake their Newlands Genesis in Ethereum to gain staking rights on Mission Control in Polygon. This was made possible by using Connext’s secure crosschain communication.
Each time a token is staked on Ethereum, a call is made to a provider that tells the staking contract which logic to trigger for the specific token.
In the case of Newlands Genesis, it sends calldata through Connext’s xcall containing the user’s current staked balance. This xcall is sent to “Mission Control Crosschain Services” on Polygon. A similar xcall is executed when a token is unstaked.
The receiver contract on “Mission Control Crosschain Services” updates a mapping containing the user’s balance, which Mission Control then reads. If the user has a balance, they can stake rent-free on the outer ring. If their balance falls to zero, their rewards are paused.
